The Back Slitting: Cutting the Backing to Ease Peeling
Back slitting refers to a cutting operation performed on the backing of a label sheet, designed to facilitate the later separation of the labels from their silicone-coated liner by the end user. Unlike the cut that isolates each label on the front, back slitting specifically targets the rear side of the sheet, where the silicone liner protecting the adhesive is located.
This operation addresses a practical need for the end user, especially when labels are sold in sheets intended for manual peeling rather than automatic removal by an applicator. A properly executed back slitting allows the backing to be easily detached in several segments or helps start the peeling of an individual label without having to force the entire sheet or risk deforming neighboring labels still in place.
From a manufacturing standpoint, back slitting requires significant technical precision. The cut must reach the backing without cutting into the front or the adhesive layer just above it, to avoid weakening the label itself or creating unwanted break points during handling. This precision depends on fine adjustment of the cutting depth of the rotary cutting tools used in production, a skill that distinguishes experienced converters from less specialized workshops.
For a professional, the presence and quality of back slitting on a given product directly affect daily ease of use, especially in contexts where labels are manually peeled at a fast pace, such as at points of sale or packaging workshops. Missing or poorly calibrated back slitting results in difficulty starting the peel, which slows down operations and can cause premature wear of the labels being handled.
Back slitting is clearly different from front slitting, which is done on the front and serves other purposes, such as visual alignment or facilitating folding of certain specific formats. It also differs from matrix removal, which involves removing material between cut labels rather than a simple cut line that eases separation. These technical nuances, though subtle on the finished product, play a real role in the daily user experience of sheet labels and should be discussed with your supplier from the design stage of a custom product intended for intensive manual use.
