Winding direction: inner or outer orientation of labels
The winding direction indicates the position of the labels on a roll, either inside or outside the core. Specifically, this characteristic specifies whether the printable side of the labels, the front, faces outward on the roll once it is wound, or conversely inward, hidden against the core. This information, often overlooked during a quick order, is crucial for proper printing operation.
Thermal printers are designed with a print head positioned at a specific point along the label path and expect the printable side to be presented in a certain orientation according to the printer’s mechanical design. A roll with a winding direction that does not match the printer’s expectation will either print on the back of the label instead of the front or produce no print at all if the detection sensor cannot correctly identify the label position.
Two main configurations exist on the market: outside winding, where the printable front is visible on the outside of the roll, and inside winding, where the front faces inward against the core. The choice between these two depends entirely on the printer model used, as some manufacturers have standardized one or the other based on their own mechanical design, with no universal standard imposed across the market.
For professionals switching printer models or testing a new roll reference from a new supplier, checking the winding direction before ordering helps avoid a common and easily preventable mistake. This check is especially important since the winding direction is not always clearly indicated on the roll packaging, and a simple visual inspection of the roll by slightly unwinding the start usually suffices to verify which side the printable front is on.
The winding direction is different from the feed direction, which concerns the orientation of the labels along the strip rather than their radial position on the roll. These two pieces of information, which complement each other, should be communicated together to the supplier when ordering, especially for rolls intended for automatic applicators, where even a small orientation error can completely halt a production line.
