Linerless: the adhesive tape without silicone backing
The term linerless refers to an adhesive tape designed without a continuous silicone backing, unlike traditional rolls where each label is protected by a silicone liner meant to be discarded after peeling. In a linerless roll, the adhesive is directly covered with a non-stick treatment applied to the back of the label itself, allowing the tape to be rolled onto itself without sticking continuously, without the need for a separate silicone layer.
This design offers several concrete advantages sought by professionals. The first is a significant reduction in the volume of waste generated during use: without a backing to discard, the end user no longer has to manage the continuous disposal of silicone liners, an increasingly valued argument by companies concerned about their environmental impact and waste management costs. The second advantage is the increased meter yield per roll: at the same roll diameter, the absence of a backing allows more linear meters of labels to be stored, reducing the frequency of roll changes on high-volume stations, a real operational time saving for teams.
However, linerless imposes specific technical constraints that every professional buyer must know before switching their printing fleet. The adhesive used must be formulated to remain repositionable or have controlled tack to avoid any unwanted glue transfer between the roll’s layers during winding. The printers used must also be compatible with this technology, particularly regarding the cutting mechanism, which must be adapted not to stick to the blade, and the detection system, which replaces the classic detection by reading printed marks on the back of the tape rather than by the transition between labels on a silicone backing.
For the CHR, foodservice, and logistics sectors, the main target segments for linerless, this type of roll addresses a dual challenge of reducing consumable costs over time and meeting growing expectations for waste reduction, driven both by end customers and European environmental regulations. However, it is essential to first verify the exact compatibility of one’s printing equipment with linerless, as a model not designed for this technology may suffer premature clogging of its print head or cutting blade.
Finally, the transition to linerless should be evaluated holistically, taking into account the cost of the consumable, the gain in meter yield, the reduction in waste volume, and any necessary investment in compatible printing equipment, to determine whether the return on investment is relevant based on one’s annual labeling volume.
