Coating: the surface treatment that applies the adhesive

Coating refers to the surface treatment that involves applying an adhesive to a substrate, whether it is paper, plastic film, or another material intended to become a self-adhesive label. This industrial process takes place very early in the production of the final roll and directly affects the quality and consistency of the adhesive layer found later in the self-adhesive composite.

Several coating techniques coexist depending on the type of adhesive and the desired result. Hot coating, used notably for Hotmelt adhesives, involves melting the adhesive and then spreading it on the substrate at a high temperature before rapid cooling. Solvent-based or water-based coating, more common for acrylic adhesives, relies on a diluted adhesive applied in a thin layer and then dried by passing through an industrial oven that removes the solvent or water, leaving only the active adhesive film.

The consistency of the coating is a key factor in the final quality of a label. A coating that is too thin or uneven will produce insufficient tack and uneven adhesion across the label, with a risk of premature peeling on certain parts of the receiving surface. Conversely, a coating that is too thick can promote creep, meaning the adhesive overflows on the edges of the label, a defect that causes sticking problems between the rolls and complicates handling by the end user.

For a professional buyer, coating is generally not a direct selection criterion since it is part of the upstream manufacturing process, invisible on the finished product. However, it explains why two rolls with the same type of adhesive on their technical data sheet can behave differently in use, as the quality and consistency of the coating process vary significantly from one manufacturer to another depending on the industrial maturity of their production lines.

Some manufacturers, including French factories historically positioned in the technical adhesive segment, master precise coating processes that guarantee a constant adhesive weight throughout the length of a reel, a mark of consistency particularly sought after by professionals in logistics and the food industry, sectors where unexpected label peeling can have direct consequences on product traceability. Asking your supplier for information about their control of the coating process is therefore a relevant indicator of the overall industrial quality of a range of thermal rolls.
