Gripper Margin: The Essential Non-Printable Area for Manufacturing
The gripper margin refers to the non-printable strip located around the edge of the label sheet, marked in red on the technical diagrams in professional catalogs, but which never appears printed on the finished products delivered to the customer. This peripheral area addresses a purely mechanical constraint related to the industrial printing and finishing process of label sheets.
On the printing presses used to produce label sheets, especially those intended for color printing in offset or flexography, the material must be gripped and mechanically fed by grippers that move it through the various printing and varnishing stations. These grippers require a dedicated surface, free of any ink or texture, to maintain a reliable grip without risking marking or damaging the useful, printed part of the sheet. This technical zone, invisible on the final product since it is later removed or located outside the useful cut area, is precisely the gripper margin.
For a professional designing a custom label visual, understanding the existence of the gripper margin is essential from the graphic creation phase. An important visual element, such as a logo, legal notice, or barcode, must never be placed in this peripheral area, or it risks being partially or completely missing on the final product, even if it appears visible on the digital proof sent before printing. Reputable suppliers always provide a template specifying the safety margins related to the gripper margin, a document to be strictly followed during the visual design.
The width of the gripper margin varies depending on the type of press used and the sheet format produced, but generally ranges from a few millimeters to one or two centimeters. This technical constraint also explains why some custom label formats involve a relatively significant material loss compared to the final useful surface, an element to consider when calculating the real manufacturing cost of a custom sheet.
Finally, it is useful to distinguish the gripper margin from the technical margin related to weeding or slitting, which concern other finishing constraints. The gripper margin is specifically linked to the mechanical feeding of the sheet on the press, while weeding involves removing material between cut labels, and slitting involves linear cuts on the front or back. These distinctions, although technical, enable a professional buyer to communicate more effectively with their supplier when designing a custom visual.
