Advance: a crucial millimetric reference for label manufacturing

In the technical vocabulary of adhesive labels, the term advance refers to the interval measured between the start of two successive labels on the same roll. Specifically, if you take the leading edge of one label and measure the distance to the leading edge of the next label, this distance corresponds to the advance. It therefore includes both the length of the label itself and the inter-label gap, also called matrix removal when dealing with die-cut sheets.

This measurement is not a trivial detail. It is one of the fundamental parameters that direct thermal and thermal transfer printers use to properly align with the roll. Most professional printers, whether desktop models or high-speed industrial printers, have an optical or ultrasonic sensor that detects the transition between two labels, or in the case of linerless, the registration mark printed on the back of the roll. This sensor allows the printer to precisely synchronize printing and cutting or peeling with the actual position of each label, thus avoiding misalignments that would cause prints to overlap two labels.

For a professional buyer, knowing the exact advance of a roll reference is important for several reasons. First, it must be compatible with the detection range of the printer used: some economical models have a limited calibration range and do not correctly recognize advances that are too short or too long. Next, the advance directly influences the roll yield, that is, the number of usable labels per roll, a criterion that impacts the calculation of the actual unit cost per printed label, beyond the simple purchase price of the roll.

In the case of linerless rolls, the concept of advance remains relevant even without a continuous silicone liner, since black marks or optical detection zones replace the registration function usually ensured by the die-cut labels on a classic liner. The accuracy of this advance then determines the quality of registration and thus the consistency of printing along the entire length of the roll.

Finally, the advance should be distinguished from the width, which corresponds to the width of the roll, and from the label format itself, which combines width and useful print length. When a professional orders a roll, it is therefore recommended to systematically check three complementary values: the width, the useful label length, and the total advance, to ensure that the chosen reference will be perfectly compatible with the printer model deployed at the point of sale or in the warehouse.
