Hotmelt Adhesive: the strength of a rubber-based adhesive

Hotmelt adhesive, sometimes called thermofusible adhesive, refers to a family of rubber-based adhesives applied hot during label manufacturing, then cooled to form a stable sticky film. The term Hotmelt directly refers to the coating process: the glue is melted, spread at high temperature on the backing, then solidified by rapid cooling, resulting in so-called reinforced adhesives known for their mechanical strength and resistance under harsher conditions than classic acrylic adhesives.

In terms of performance, Hotmelt adhesives stand out for a high initial tack, meaning a very strong immediate stickiness right upon application, even without prolonged pressure. This feature makes them a preferred choice when the label must adhere instantly on a fast production line, with no drying time or adjustment margin. They also show good cold resistance, which explains their frequent use on products intended for refrigerated or frozen storage, a segment where many acrylic adhesives lose performance.

On the downside, Hotmelt adhesives have some limitations that a professional buyer should know before selecting them. Their resistance to ultraviolet rays and prolonged aging is generally lower than that of acrylic adhesives, which can result in yellowing or loss of adhesion in long-term outdoor applications. They also tolerate continuous high temperatures less well, a point to check for any use involving contact with a stable heat source, such as certain industrial equipment.

In the thermal labeling sector, Hotmelt adhesives are commonly associated with rolls intended for logistics, transport, and handling, where fast application on the line and cold resistance take precedence over very long-term outdoor durability. They are also found on shipping labels, traceability labels in refrigerated warehouses, or on certain supports intended for the fresh food sector in large retail.

To choose properly between a Hotmelt adhesive and an acrylic adhesive, it is important to start from the actual specifications of the application. If the main constraint is application speed and cold resistance, Hotmelt is relevant. If the priority is long-term resistance, to UV or wider temperature variations including heat, a classic or reinforced acrylic adhesive will often be preferable. The thermal roll supplier must be able to clearly indicate, for each reference, the exact nature of the adhesive used, a factor that directly determines the label’s performance once applied to the final product.
