The self-adhesive complex refers to the layering of the three components that make up a classic adhesive label on a roll or sheet: the release liner, also called backing or liner, the adhesive layer, and the face stock, which is the printable part. Understanding this structure helps a professional buyer better grasp why two seemingly similar roll references can perform very differently depending on their use.
The face stock is the visible and printable side of the label. Its material varies depending on the type of printing desired: direct thermal paper for heat printing, coated paper or film for thermal transfer, or vellum paper, polyester, or synthetic film depending on the durability requirements of the final product. The quality and type of face stock directly determine the label’s readability, resistance to abrasion, moisture, or UV once applied.
The adhesive layer, positioned between the face stock and the backing, ensures the label sticks to its final surface. Its formulation—permanent, removable, repositionable, or reinforced Hotmelt—must be chosen based on the receiving surface, operating temperature, and desired application duration. This layer notably determines the tack, meaning the immediate stickiness without pressure, as well as the resistance to creep over time.
The backing, finally, protects the adhesive until use and enables continuous automatic application thanks to its silicone-coated release layer. Its weight and material affect the roll’s linear yield and the reliability of automatic peeling on high-speed labeling lines.
For a professional, understanding the self-adhesive complex as a whole helps avoid a common mistake: comparing rolls only based on the face stock, especially the price of thermal paper, without considering the overall compatibility of the three layers. A high-quality face stock paired with an adhesive unsuitable for the final surface will produce disappointing results, even if the printed image looks flawless.
