The core: the heart of the roll, expressed as the inner diameter

The core refers to the cardboard tube around which the label strip or transfer ribbon is wound. It forms the central axis around which the entire roll is built and is mainly characterized by its inner diameter, that is, the diameter of the tube’s central hole, which must precisely match the spindle of the printer on which the roll will be installed.

The most common core diameters on the European thermal label market are generally around 25, 40, or 76 millimeters, depending on the type of printer and the targeted roll format. Small desktop or cash register printers often use cores with a small diameter, while industrial printers or models designed for long rolls require wider cores capable of supporting the weight and mechanical tension of a larger roll without deforming.

An incompatible core diameter with the spindle simply makes it impossible to install the roll on the printer, with no easy workaround. Unlike other parameters such as width or feed, where slight variations can sometimes be tolerated by the equipment, the core diameter must be respected with near-perfect accuracy; otherwise, the roll simply cannot be mounted on its holder.

Beyond the inner diameter, the manufacturing quality of the core itself deserves attention. A core of insufficient quality, too flexible or poorly calibrated, can deform under the weight of the roll during storage or transport, causing misalignment of the spindle and irregular unwinding issues once the roll is installed on the printer. A core that is too rigid or poorly sized in diameter can also complicate installation or cause excessive play on the spindle, leading to vibrations and print misalignments on high-speed models.

For professionals managing a diverse printer fleet, it is recommended to keep a precise reference table linking each printer model to its compatible core diameter, alongside width and feed information. This simple precaution prevents the most common ordering errors, especially when multiple printer models from different brands coexist on the same site, each potentially requiring a slightly different core diameter despite otherwise comparable printing characteristics.
