Weeding: the material removed between cut labels
Weeding refers to the part of the material eliminated between the cut labels on a sheet or roll. When manufacturing die-cut labels, especially non-rectangular shapes or labels arranged in a staggered pattern, the material areas between each label must be removed to leave only the useful labels on the liner, ready to be peeled off one by one by the end user.
This operation, performed at the end of the production line, requires high mechanical precision. The cut must reach exactly the face stock and adhesive without cutting into the liner, so that the liner maintains its integrity and continues to serve as the silicone-coated backing throughout the roll. Poorly calibrated weeding can result either in incomplete removal of the material between labels, which hinders the clean peeling of each label, or conversely, excessive cutting of the liner, which weakens the strip and increases the risk of tearing on high-speed applicators.
For a professional ordering labels in a specific shape—round, oval, or custom die-cut according to a logo or particular packaging—the quality of the weeding is a direct indicator of the converter’s expertise. A strip with irregular weeding results in visible material residues stuck on the liner between labels, noticeable to the naked eye and problematic in use on automatic applicators, which may mistake these residues for an extra label during optical detection.
Weeding also impacts the linear yield of the roll. The more the label shape deviates from a simple continuously aligned rectangle, the more the weeded surface increases proportionally to the useful surface, mechanically reducing the number of labels obtained for the same roll length. This partly explains why complex-shaped or staggered labels are generally charged at a higher unit price than simple rectangular labels of equivalent surface area.
Finally, weeding is distinct from zig zag, which refers to a particular label arrangement without Caroll strips, as well as from front or back slitting, which involve linear cuts rather than the removal of inter-form material. Knowing these distinctions allows a professional buyer to communicate more precisely with their supplier when designing a custom label and to anticipate the manufacturing constraints specific to each format considered.
