Backing: the silicone layer that protects the adhesive

The term backing, also referred to as the liner in French adhesive labeling terminology, corresponds to the material coated with a silicone layer that protects the adhesive layer of a label before application. In a classic self-adhesive structure, the backing is one of the three fundamental layers, alongside the face stock, intended for printing, and the adhesive layer itself, which ensures attachment to the final surface.

The primary role of the backing is to act as a non-stick protector. Without this silicone layer, the adhesive would remain exposed and stick uncontrollably as soon as the roll is manufactured, making clean winding or industrial handling of the reel impossible. The silicone applied to the surface of the backing creates a very low surface energy interface, allowing the adhesive to stay in contact with the liner without permanently sticking to it, while retaining its full tack once the label is peeled off and applied to its final surface.

This same principle makes automatic roll application possible, a major advantage for professionals equipped with automatic applicators or printers integrated into a production line. The silicone backing indeed allows a smooth and controlled release of each label at the exact moment it needs to be applied, without snagging or excessive resistance, ensuring the speed and reliability of high-throughput labeling lines in logistics, food processing, or retail.

There are several types of backing depending on the weight and nature of the paper or film used as the silicone support, with variations that are more or less thin depending on reel diameter constraints and desired linear yield. A thinner backing allows more linear meters of labels to fit on the same reel diameter, reducing the frequency of roll changes at workstations—an operational advantage not to be underestimated for high-volume users.

The backing is also the support on which certain slitting operations are performed. Backside slitting, in particular, involves cutting the liner of a sheet to facilitate the later separation of labels from the silicone support, a process distinct from frontside slitting, which is done on the face stock.

For linerless rolls, which make up a growing share of the thermal printing consumables market, the principle is different since the adhesive strip does away with any continuous silicone backing. Understanding the function of the backing helps to better grasp one of the structural advantages of linerless: the absence of a silicone liner reduces the volume of waste generated during use, an increasingly sought-after benefit by professionals concerned about their environmental impact and waste management costs.
